Clean – Scale & Polish with one

Clean – Scale & Polish with one of our Professional Hygienists or Dr. David

After your clean, also known as a scale and polish, you will leave Vard Dental with your teeth feeling lovely and smooth and clean. A professional clean will remove plaque and tartar build-up which along with a good oral health routine should minimise the damage which plaque can cause.

Gum disease is often caused by a build-up of plaque bacteria, the best way to remove this is by twice daily tooth flossing and brushing and twice yearly professional cleans.  No matter how well you floss and brush your teeth there will always be hard to reach areas that are tricky to keep clean. In these areas, plaque bacteria can accumulate and may eventually mineralise to form a tough, crusty deposit called calculus or tartar, which is impossible to remove by flossing and brushing alone. If not removed, more plaque can build up around the tooth and potentially under the gum line, leading to the progression of gum disease.

To reduce the risk of gum disease or to help stop it from becoming more serious, we recommend that you have a professional clean to get your teeth properly clean twice a year.

The first step will be to remove the deposits of plaque and tartar. Often an ultrasound scraper is used first to get rid of the bulk of the tartar, followed by specialised handheld instruments to scrape away any stubborn remains. The areas between your teeth will also be cleaned with floss or another tool, and your teeth polished with a gently abrasive paste. Not only do your teeth look smooth and shiny after a cleaning, the newly slick surface makes it a little harder for plaque to build up again on your teeth.

Local anaesthetics are not usually needed for standard cleans but are available to you, so please ask your Hygienists advice if you think you would benefit from a local anaesthetic.  If you need a deep clean, a local anaesthetic may be advisable as your Hygienist needs to go below the gum line to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria.

The professional cleaning of teeth is sometimes referred to as prophylaxis (or prophy for short). It’s a Greek word which mean “to prevent beforehand” so in this case, apart from lovely smooth clean teeth you are also helping yourself to prevent gum disease and help you Keep Your Teeth for Life.

Twice a year is best to remove plaque (soft sticky bacteria infested film) or tartar (brown/black calcium deposits) build-up which if left untreated, over a long period of time, may result in the need for expensive treatment such as advanced gum treatment / deep cleans.

Don’t skip dental care: We all know that postponing regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings is a bad idea. Yet we still manage to convince ourselves that we can skip a year or two with no repercussions. Don’t wait until you are in pain to see us.   Preventing problems is easy and very cost-effective. And regular care also results in significantly reduced discomfort during procedures such as cleanings.

Our Professional Hygienists aim is to get you to the stage of only requiring routine, twice a year, treatments.  We will provide you with advice, tips and techniques of good oral hygiene in an award winning, friendly environment.

If you agree with our twice a year is best policy, please ask about our bundle pricing.
